Reliable Energy to Meet Growing Demand

To help meet rising electricity demand, we’re building two new generation projects in Georgia, including a new combined-cycle (CC) natural gas-fired power plant in Monroe County, currently known as the Smarr CC.

This cutting-edge, two-unit facility will generate more than 1,400 megawatts of reliable electricity for Georgia homes and businesses. The new plant will be built on land already owned by Oglethorpe Power, near the existing Smarr Energy Facility, a natural gas-fired combustion turbine plant we operate.

POWERING GEORGIA'S FUTURE

The Smarr CC represents a capital investment of more than $2 billion in Monroe County. Once constructed, the facility will be among the highest performing, lowest-emitting and most efficient natural gas plants in Georgia. Additionally, by using air-cooled condensers instead of traditional cooling towers, the plant will significantly reduce water consumption compared to most combined-cycle facilities.

Following a successful permitting process, onsite work may begin as soon as August or September 2025, with commercial operation expected in 2029.

Our History in Monroe County

Oglethorpe Power has a longstanding partnership with Monroe County, rooted in decades of energy generation and community support.

Existing Operations

  • For more than two decades, we’ve operated the Smarr Energy Facility, a natural gas-fired combustion turbine plant located near the site of the future Smarr CC facility.
  • We’ve been a dedicated co-owner of Plant Scherer Units 1 and 2 for more than 40 years.

The Smarr CC will add to Oglethorpe Power’s diverse energy portfolio, helping to meet growing energy demands. We have no plans to close or release ownership of our existing assets, ensuring a long-term presence in Monroe County.
