Oglethorpe Power Acquires Natural Gas-Fired Combustion Turbine Generation Unit

Tucker, GA (May 25, 2023) – Today Oglethorpe Power announced it acquired one generating unit at Baconton Power, a four-unit 188-megawatt combustion turbine generation facility located in Baconton, Georgia, from Baconton Power, LLC.

The acquired GE combustion turbine unit, which entered commercial operation in 2000, will add 47 megawatts of natural gas-fired capacity to Oglethorpe Power’s diverse generation portfolio. The unit also features dual-fuel capability and can run on diesel fuel that is stored on site, further enhancing the company’s year-round resiliency and winter reliability. Additionally, with technology that enables a fast ramp-up rate, the unit can come online and achieve full capacity in approximately five minutes, increasing the resiliency of the electric grid. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“The acquisition of this unit contributes to our increasing portfolio of efficient, low carbon-emitting natural gas,” said Oglethorpe Power Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer Elizabeth B. Higgins. “Oglethorpe Power is well positioned in the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.”

The acquired unit at Baconton Power marks Oglethorpe Power’s seventh acquisition of natural gas-fired generation in Georgia over the last 14 years, totaling more than 3,200 megawatts.
